Diagnostic Only
A standalone manuscript assessment. You receive a written report covering all eight diagnostic dimensions. No obligation to continue. Most authors use this to decide their next step — with us or independently.
Most authors don't need more writing advice — they need clarity on where their manuscript actually stands. BookGraft begins every engagement with an honest, structured assessment. No sales pitch. Just a clear picture of what's working, what's not, and what comes next.
Use this table to self-assess before reaching out. We evaluate every manuscript against these same criteria during our initial review.
| Dimension | What We Look For | Common Issue | Your Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Structural Integrity | Does the narrative arc hold from opening to resolution? Are chapter breaks purposeful? | warning Sagging middle | — |
| Voice Consistency | Is the authorial voice distinct, sustained, and appropriate for genre? | error Tone drift | — |
| Pacing & Rhythm | Scene-level momentum. Does the reader want to turn the page? | warning Over-exposition | — |
| Character Depth | Motivations, contradictions, growth arcs. Do characters earn their endings? | check_circle Often strong | — |
| Dialogue Authenticity | Does dialogue reveal character and advance plot simultaneously? | warning Info-dumping | — |
| Opening Hook | First three pages. Would an agent keep reading? | error Slow entry | — |
| Market Positioning | Genre alignment, comparable titles, reader expectations. | warning Genre confusion | — |
| Line-Level Craft | Sentence variation, word economy, sensory detail. | check_circle Improvable | — |
If you marked three or more amber/red areas, a formal diagnostic review would be a strong starting point.
"I'd been revising in circles for two years. The diagnostic report pinpointed exactly why my third act wasn't landing — it was a structural issue I'd been treating as a prose problem." — R. Halloran, literary fiction, 2024
"Honest without being discouraging. The checklist format made it actionable. I knew exactly what to fix and in what order." — T. Maguire, memoir, 2023
We don't sell tiers. Every manuscript has a different starting point and a different destination. These are the routes authors typically follow with us.
A standalone manuscript assessment. You receive a written report covering all eight diagnostic dimensions. No obligation to continue. Most authors use this to decide their next step — with us or independently.
For manuscripts that need structural work. We collaborate over multiple rounds, focusing on arc, character, pacing, and voice before any line editing begins. Typical engagement: 6–14 weeks.
For manuscripts that are editorially sound but need market-facing polish: query letter development, synopsis crafting, first-chapter refinement, and submission strategy for agents or independent publishing.
From raw draft to submission-ready. A sustained collaboration covering diagnostics, developmental editing, line editing, and publishing preparation. Reserved for committed projects.
You send us your manuscript — or the first 50 pages if you prefer a focused assessment. Within ten working days, you receive a detailed written report covering every dimension in the checklist above, plus a candid editorial letter addressing the manuscript's core strengths and the specific areas that need attention.
There is no follow-up call unless you request one. No upsell. The diagnostic is designed to stand alone as a decision-making tool. Many authors take the report and revise independently. Others choose to continue working with us. Either outcome is a success.
"The diagnostic letter was the most useful feedback I've received in six years of writing workshops." — D. Connolly, historical fiction
We believe every manuscript deserves an honest reading — not flattery, not gatekeeping, but a clear-eyed assessment from someone who understands both craft and market. Our editors have backgrounds in literary publishing, developmental editing, and manuscript acquisition. We read widely and edit precisely.
BookGraft is based in Kristieview, Ireland. We work with authors internationally, but our editorial sensibility is grounded in close reading, structural thinking, and a deep respect for the author's vision.

We will tell you what's not working. We'll also tell you why, and what to do about it. Encouragement without specificity is not useful editorial feedback.
It's your book. We make recommendations, not demands. Every editorial suggestion is framed as a question for you to answer through revision.
We take on a limited number of manuscripts at any given time. This means genuine attention to your work — not a templated report with your title pasted in.
Tell us about your manuscript. We'll respond within two working days with an honest assessment of whether our services are the right fit — and if they're not, we'll say so.
